3 William Oscar Porter |
|
William Oscar Porter was born on May 13, 1875, son of John Henry Porter and Amelia Scott. He was the last of seven children. His mother, Amelia, passed away during or shortly after his birth. According to notes written during a conversation with Lucille Porter, she recalled that Oscar was raised by his Uncle Otis Porter, the brother of John Henry Porter, and Aunt Hanna. William Oscar Porter married Martha M. Anderson about 1900. Martha was born December 1883 in Arkansas. Oscar died July 29, 1919, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. |

In the June 1, 1880 census in Victoria, Knox County, Illinois, records the following. Oscar is “Living away from home”. It is possible that with a new baby in the house, it was decided that Oscar would go live with Uncle Otis and Aunt Hanna. |

Shown below is the June 5, 1880 Census in Lynn Township, Knox County, Illinois. Otis, Hannah, and their daughter Sarah Jane have a farm. Sarah Jane was engaged to be married to Orr William Annis on November 28, 1880. The marriage would make room in their home for Oscar to come live with them. Since Oscar’s name does not appear in the census, it is possible that Oscar’s move was taking place at this time. |
