The Oklahoma Land Run for the Unassigned Lands was on April 22, 1889 and John Henry and Mary Emeline Porter were there as homesteaders in Logan County, claiming Lots 5 and 6 and the south half of southeast quarter of section thirty three (33) in township twenty (20) north of range three (3) west, containing 113 acres. His home is listed in Smith’s 1890 City Directory of Rural Homesteads. Henry and Mary sold the land to James Case on January 3, 1895 for $1,300. Henry’s big sister Rhoda homesteaded the quarter section across the fence line to the south. |

In the June 1, 1880 census in Victoria, Knox County, Illinois, records the following. This is especially interesting in that it suggests that Amelia was reported to have been born in (Vermont) (parenthesis probably meant they were not sure where she was born). |

Below from the March 1885 Kansas State Census, recorded in Creswell Township, Cowley County (Post Office at Arkansas City), page 19. Hester is new to the family, female, 6 years old. Could she be adopted? The census records that Henry is from Ohio, everyone else from Illinois. It also records that the family moved to Kansas from Illinois. |
