3 Charles Henry Porter

Charles Henry Porter was born on September 18, 1862, in Illinois, son of John Henry Porter and Amelia Scott.  He was the oldest of seven children. 

He was reported to be a baker, and a coal miner in Illinois.  Charlie lived in Ripley, Oklahoma as did his brother Otis and his father John Henry Porter.  Charlie’s father John Henry Porter died July 26, 1915 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma.  Charlie witnessed the death certificate.

 

Charles Henry Porter married Mary M. Polly Gassaway, sister of Florence Gassaway (wife of Otis W Porter).  She was born February 1861 in Missouri, and died November 1942.  Charles Henry died January 12, 1947, in Yale, Oklahoma.  Both are buried in Perkins, Oklahoma.  They did not have any children.

Charley Porter, 48, 16 at first marriage, born Illinois, father from Ohio, mother from United States, occupation: owner, Livery Barn.

Mary Porter, 50, 16 at first marriage, born Kansas, father from Tennessee, mother from Ohio.

Jerome Gasaway, father-in-law, 78, born Tennessee, father from Pennsylvania, mother from United States.

Otis Porter, 44, 19 at first marriage, born Iowa, father from Ohio, mother from United States, occupation: Collector, Cream Station.

Florence Porter, wife, 42, 19 at first marriage, born Canada, both parents from Canada.

Elva Porter, daughter, 18, born Oklahoma, father from Iowa, mother from Canada.

The June 1, 1880 Census in Victoria Township, Knox County, Illinois records the following:

Charles and Otis operated a Livery Stable and Feed Store in Ripley, Oklahoma.

Otis W Porter, 34, married 9 years, born March 1866 in Ohio, father from Ohio, mother from (not recorded), occupation: Liveryman.

Florence M Porter, wife, 31, married 9 years, born August 1868 in Canada, both parents from Canada (English), mother of two children of which only one is living.

Clara A Porter, daughter, 8, born April 1892 in Oklahoma, father from Ohio, mother from Canada (English).

Otis William Porter died March 24, 1916 and was buried in Ripley, Oklahoma.  Florence Porter, wife of Otis, moved to Guthrie, as did Charley and Mary.

The May 2, 1930 Census in Ward 2, Guthrie, Logan County, Oklahoma records the following:

Address 402 S. Second Street (owned home) (intersection at Springer Street).
