Anecia comments:
“One of my first memories was sitting at the table eating boiled potatoes with the skins on. The house was at 402 South Second (Guthrie), where we lived in the house that was attached to the Golden Rule Grocery. My Mom and Dad ran the grocery store and I was born in the bedroom of that house. One of my next memories was of my older brother Junior. He had just arrived home from working for the government during the war. He was working at Colorado Springs, Colorado and had broken his leg. I remember him telling me that if I would wait a little while to talk that he would give me some money. We were all excited to have him back.
“The house where we lived was small, but there was a second story over the store that attached to our house. I remember sitting on the floor in one of the rooms up there, playing with my paper dolls. Since I had no sister, I played by myself often. Sometimes I would sit in the store during store hours and copy Christmas card pictures on butcher paper. Once I recall filling out one of those little papers where you say, I like tide soap because--- I tried to write because it makes me sneeze, but I couldn't get any customers who would spell it for me. One time I was standing in front of the meat counter that had a glass front. I remember six packs or bottles of pop sitting on the floor in front of it. A man came into the store very drunk. He was standing in front of the counter talking to dad. He told dad that he wasn't afraid of anyone, not even the President of the United States. To prove his point he reached inside the pocket of his second pair of pants and pulled out a knife. I remember being so scared that I stumbled over the pop bottles trying to get away.” |
